Emmett-Walter Byers, 93, died Tuesday, May 26, at his home on the Byers Ranch near Emmett. Walter was born March 13, 1922 at Kansas City, MO., the son of Ward and Lucille Hebard Byers. He grew up in Kanas City and graduated from Westport High school, where he played center on the football team. He attended the University of Iowa . Mr. Byers was one of the 20th century's most powerful sports figures, even though he never appeared on the playing field and was rarely in the public eye. In 1951, he was named the first executive director of the N.C.A.A. After his retirement Walter a very private man moved back to the family ranch where he lived until his death. Survivors include two sons, Fritz and Ward; a daughter. Ellen; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private graveside services will be held at the St. Clere Cemetery, Emmett. A public memorial service will be held later in Kansas City. Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Marys Community Foundation for Scholarships in Walters Name.
