St. Marys- Leona M. Wright, 104, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at the St. Marys Manor.
She was born July 11, 1908 at Onaga, the daughter of Robert B. and Alma L. Flinn Wright. Miss Wright grew up in the Onaga community and graduated from Onaga High School in 1925. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and Kansas State College. Miss Wright taught school from 1925 until 1935 in various Pottawatomie County schools. She graduated from Stewart Beauty Academy in Topeka in 1936.
Miss Wright owned and operated Wright Beauty Salon in St Marys for 52 years. She had also been a hairdresser at St. Marys Manor for many years. Miss Wright was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church and had been a former member of the Wamego United Methodist Church. She was the director of the Adult and Youth Choirs at St. Marys for many years and had also served on the church board. She taught Sunday school as a Nursery I & II teacher in Wamego from 1971 until 1990. Miss Wright was a longtime member of the St. Marys Chamber of Commerce. She had taught Menninger Bible Classes since 1961 and was a member of the American Bible Society since 1965. Miss Wright was the local Chairwomen of the American Heart Association for over 20 years. She also had played the piano at St. Marys Manor for many years.
Miss Wright was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include three nephews, Norman R. Wright Jr. (Idaho), Dennis D. Wright (Colorado) and Craig E. Wright (Kansas).
Miss Wright donated her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Memorial services will be at 3:00 P.M.Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Inurnment will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 19, 2015 at the WamegoCemetery .
