She was born June 10, 1922 at Lyndon, the daughter of Grant Rhines and Mable Thompson Culver. Leila graduated from Lyndon High School. As a young girl out of high school Leila went to work for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City as a screen printer. She was well thought of and admired among her friends and neighbors. She was an accomplished acrylic and oil painter, as well as photographer. She loved nature, gardening, birds, and trips to Alaska.
