Lawrence Schulte Sr

Maple Hill- Lawrence A. "Larry" Schulte Sr. passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born June 11, 1918 at Wichita, the son of Albert and Etta Jordan Schulte. Larry grew up in Goddard and later moved to St. Marys. He graduated from St Marys High School with the class of 1936. Larry attended Friends University in Wichita where he played basketball. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII with the 312 Depot Repair Squadron in North Africa and Southern Italy. The town of Schulte was named for his grandfather Peter Schulte who sold his land to the railroad for $1.00, a spur was added and soon an elevator and the community grew from there. After returning from the war Larry and his wife LaVina moved to Wichita where he farmed. They later moved to Maple Hill and Larry was a mechanic owning and operating Larry's Garage. He attended the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church and was a member of the James Elmer Romick American Legion Post No. 130 in Maple Hill. He had been a member of the VFW and the Moose Lodge. Larry was a volunteer fireman and had served as Chief of the Maple Hill Fire Department and the Maple Hill Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and a past member of the Kiwanis Club. Larry and LaVina looked forward to his DSR reunion each year and he was starting to make plans for the 2014 reunion. On December 26, 1941 he was united in marriage to LaVina Mackie at her parents' home in Maple Hill. She preceded him in death on March 22, 2008. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Schulte and a sister Norma Jean Thome. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Larry (Barbara) Schulte Jr., Overland Park, Lana (Kent) Johnson and Layne (Kelley) Schulte all of Maple Hill; six grandchildren, Martina Johnson, Timothy Beseau, Tiffany Clayton, Aimee Sesler, Zachary Schulte and Cameron Schulte; six great-grandchildren, Jordan Johnson, Erika Sesler, Grant Sesler, Sophia Sesler, Ezekiel Clayton and Brantley Schulte. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M.Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church. Interment with military services will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Mr. Schulte will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.Friday, November 22, 2013 at the church in Maple Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church or Midland Hospice and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
