Joe Flanagan

St. Marys-James Joseph "Joe" Flanagan, 84, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at his home in St. Marys. He was born in August of 1928 at Emmett, the son of Michael and Mary Flanagan. Joe graduated from Emmett High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Joe had lived all of his life in the Emmett community until moving to St. Marys in 2011. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 45 years. Mr. Flanagan was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Aileen Flanagan, Mary Hefner and Kay Reser. Joe was also preceded in death by a son, Bobby Flanagan on April 5, 2008. He was united in marriage to Amelia Bond on June 22, 1957 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Jodeen Jensen, Mustang, OK, Joe Flanagan, Jr. (Rhonda), Topeka, Mike Flanagan, Craig, IA, Muggins (Tom) Flerlage, St. Marys, John "Jeff" (Marla) Flanagan and Kevin Flanagan all of Emmett; a sister, Marguerite Applehanz, Topeka; 6 grandchildren, Brandi (Jeff) Messman, Robbie (Kayla) Flerlage, Dylan Flerlage & Darrin, Kayce & Mitchel Flanagan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment with Military Honors will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Emmett. Mr. Flanagan will lie in state from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Friday, December 14, 2012 at Piper Funeral Home and after 7:00 P.M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where there will be a prayer vigil recited at 7:30 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to be designated at a later date and sent in care of the funeral home.
