James Ernest Schleif passed peacefully on June 15, 2025, at the age of 70 in Belvue, Kansas. Born on January 11, 1955 in Wamego, Kansas, he was raised on the family homestead farm in rural Belvue/Wells Creek area and continued to live in the rural Belvue area for his entire life.

James was rooted in the local community. He attended grade school at the District 33 Schoolhouse before furthering his education at St. Marys schools, graduating from St. Marys High School in 1973. He later attended Manhattan Technical School, where he earned a degree in Welding, laying a foundation for his successful career.

James started his career first with Balderson, Inc. in Wamego in 1975, which later became part of Caterpillar Work Tools. He retired in 2020 after 45 years of dedicated service.

A lifetime member of ABATE of Kansas, James served as the District 15 representative for several years, advocating for motorcycle safety and community involvement. His passion for motorcycling was further exhibited through his support of fundraising events, particularly the MDA Run for Life, where he received recognition as a top supporter alongside Randy (Slim) Hatch for many years.

James possessed a myriad of interests that enriched his life. He found joy in spending time on his Harley, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and gardening. He cherished his weekly coffee dates with “the boys” and delighted in his role as a grandpa to his beloved grandchildren.

James was married to Kayla Surritt on January 17, 1976 at the Wells Creek Church; she survives of the home.

He is also survived by his sons, Matthew J. Schleif of Wamego and Nathan E. Schleif (Chelsea Dillon) of Belvue; his daughter, Kristal K. Reamer (Phillip Steckman) of Wakefield; his sisters, Linda (Larry) Cowdin of Manhattan and Mary Bennett of Belvue; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest R. and Edith L. Schleif, and his nephew, David J. Schleif.
