James Lawrence Mees, a steadfast pillar of the St. Mary’s community, passed away on June 11, 2025, after a sudden illness, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service. Born on December 23, 1943, in Oakland, California, he later journeyed to Kansas, where he would carve out a life that touched the hearts of many as the second of five children to Lawrence and Mary (Tenbrink) Mees.
After graduating from St. Marys High School in 1962, Jim pursued higher education at Emporia State College, earning a degree in business that would set the foundation for his successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. His professional journey took him through roles in Topeka and Kansas City before he devoted himself to the St. Marys State Bank, where he dedicated many years until his retirement.
Jim’s contributions extended far beyond his professional life. He was a fixture in the St. Mary’s community, eagerly volunteering his time and energy to various initiatives, all while nurturing a deep commitment to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. For many years, he also served on the Board of Directors for the St. Mary’s Historical Society, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to preserving the rich narrative of his hometown.
In his youth, Jim found joy in the great outdoors, indulging in hunting and golfing, and creating cherished memories while traveling with family and friends. His service in the National Guard further exemplified his spirit of dedication and duty. As health challenges arose, he transitioned from his beloved home to St. Marys Manor, where he resided during the last year of his life.
Jim's love for life was evident in his passions, including caring for his cattle, playing bridge, and the thrill of the casino—activities that brought him joy and connection to those around him. Above all, he cherished the moments spent with family, who were his utmost pride and joy.
He is survived by his loving sisters, Margaret (Bob) Peterson, Barbara (Pete) Stewart, Jan (Steve) Grummert, and his brother Steve (Rhonda) Mees, all of whom will carry forth his memory with love.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his honor at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, Kansas. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, allowing friends and family to pay their respects. Jim will lie in state at the Piper Funeral Home, where loved ones may gather for visitation on Tuesday, June 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by the Rosary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Project Fund or St. Marys Senior Center, a testament to Jim’s enduring commitment to his faith and community. Contributions may be sent directly to the respective fund or sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas, 66536.
