Gerald "Jerry" Gene Bingham was born in Iola, Kansas on April 3, 1942. He peacefully passed on November 14, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by the love of his family and the spirit of the many he inspired throughout his life.
Jerry earned his undergraduate degree in Education from Emporia State University and a Masters of Administration from Washburn University. He went on to dedicate his career to education serving as the athletic director at Rossville High School and a math and science teacher in school districts USD 501, USD 437, and USD 321. Jerry was well-respected by colleagues and students alike, having coached multiple sports to include basketball, golf, football, and wrestling. He dedicated his life to teaching, mentoring, and nurturing those around him, always aiming to bring out the best in each student and athlete. His commitment to education was evident not only in his professional life but also in the values he instilled at home.
At the heart of Jerry's life was his cherished family. He and his wife, Janice, celebrated 63 years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and strong values. Together, they raised three sons—Kurt, Doug, and Jason—who each built families of their own, continuing the values instilled by Jerry. Kurt, married to Susan, who welcomed Zach and Annie into the world; Zach later married Steph. Doug and his wife, Tanyea, brought Aaron, Brooke, Adam, Devin and José Rafael into this union—each grandchild a reflection of Jerry’s love and guidance. Aaron's marriage to Jennifer blessed them with Auggie and Molly, while Brooke married Austin, who welcomed Ariana to their family. His youngest son, Jason, carried on the family legacy by welcoming Dakota, Tanner, Sabrina, Aspen, and Parker into the world along with great grandson Kendon.
Jerry took immense pride in his family, savoring the joyful times spent together at their cabin on Wabaunsee Lake. Jerry found pleasure in sharing his passions with his grandchildren, teaching them to fish, build bonfires, and play card games (playfully beating them). Known for his famous Mickey Mouse waffles and his skill at the grill, he enjoyed creating memorable family gatherings. He also loved quail and pheasant hunting, a sunny day on the golf course, and quiet evenings burning sticks in the chimenea.
Known for his reliability, loyalty, and quiet integrity, Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a trusted friend to many. He believed deeply in hard work and persistence, values he lived by and passed down to his family. His influence extended to the countless students and colleagues he mentored over the years.
In his later years, Jerry demonstrated courage and resilience in his battle with Parkinson's, finding support among fellow fighters and forming bonds that brought him comfort. He enjoyed his weekly boxing at the Rocksteady Boxing Facility.
Preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Curtis Bingham, his sister Janice, and his brother Darrell, Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife, Janice, their three sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren, great grandchildren along with many friends and former students who cherished him. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his dedication to teaching, and his passion for life. His presence will be dearly missed and his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched.
