Gary L. Schaefer, a beloved member of the Topeka community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at Brookdale Memory Center in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 84. Gary was born on February 23, 1939, to George and Bessie (Lewis) Schaefer in Topeka, where he lived for most of his life.
Gary graduated from Topeka High School in 1957 and earned his BA in History and Political Science from Washburn University in 1962. Gary served in the United States Army from 1963-1968 and was a member of The American Legion for 46 continuous years. He taught secondary education in Chillicothe, MO, Wichita, and Perry-Lecompton for a total of 12 years before pursuing a 38-year career as an Engineer, Yard Foreman, Switchman and Brakeman with the Missouri Pacific, Rock Island, Union Pacific, and Santa Fe Railroads.
Gary was a dedicated member of the community and enjoyed participating in car shows, estate sales, collecting antiques, car magazines and working for Stanley Flowers. Gary had been with his long-time girlfriend Remona Richardson for over 25 years, and they shared many cherished memories together.
Gary had immense gratitude for all of the staff members of both Brookdale Topeka and Phoenix Home Care & Hospice. He touched the lives of many and will be remembered for his kind heart, sense of humor and unwavering spirit. Gary's legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka.
