Dorthy Ann (Dirks) Argabright passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Homestead of Topeka.
Dorthy was born November 16, 1930, to Cordy D. and Martha Virginia (Denman)Dirks in Martin, South Dakota.
As a child, she moved with her parents and brother to Charleston, Mississippi and later to Hobart, Oklahoma. In 1936 the family returned to South Dakota where they lived on a farm near Martin in Bennet County. Dorthy attended a rural school in Bennet County before attending and graduating from Bennet County High School in 1948. She completed one year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she met Melvin (Scott) Argabright. They were married on August 24, 1949, at the family home near Martin S.D.
Following Scott’s graduation in 1951, they moved to a farm near Nemaha, Nebraska where all four of their children were born. In November 1955 the family moved to South Dakota where Scott joined the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS) where he worked the rest of his working years. Over the next 25 years, the family lived in Murdo, Winner, Belle Fourche, Mobridge and Huron in South Dakota.
In 1980 Scott and Dorthy moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they continued to live following Scott’s retirement in 1992. Dorthy continued to live in Lincoln following Scott’s death on December 26, 2011. Dorthy continued to live in the family home until 2014 when she moved to an assisted living facility. That was followed by a move to another facility in Topeka, Kansas where she lived until her passing.
Dorthy was a full-time homemaker and mother of four who also spent some time working as a part-time waitress. She loved to travel, SHOPPING, reading cookbooks and cooking, playing bridge and square dancing. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Lions Club Auxiliaries in Winner and Huron and the Toastmistress Club in Huron.
Dorthy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and sister-in-law. She is survived by her brother-in-law Loren, sister-in-law Leah, son and daughter-in-law Norm and Cherrie Argabright, son and daughter-in-law Pat and Karen Argabright, daughter and son-in-law Diana and Martin Schweitzer and daughter Virginia. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in the Nemaha Cemetery in Nemaha, Nebraska at a later date.
