Charles Sumner

September 26, 1925 — March 18, 2016

Charles Robert "Bob" Sumner, 90, passed away Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born north of Delia, KS on September 26, 1925 to Walter and Maude Sumner. He attended Neive Grade School and Mayetta High School. He was a farmer until 1954 when he went to work at Goodyear. He retired in 1984. In 1947 he married Margaret Moore. They have two sons: Dennis and Vernon and one daughter Nancy. Bob and Margaret raised their family in Delia, KS. Bob was very active in the Delia community and served as mayor for many years, he was instrumental with the implementation of water resources into Delia, and was council member of Sacred Heart Church. In 1990 Bob and Margaret moved to St. Marys where they became members of the Immaculate Conception Church. Bob enjoyed coaching baseball, fishing and golfing. He always attended the grandchildren and great grandchildren's events. For twenty years Bob and Margaret spent their winters in Texas and enjoyed their time there with new and old friends. The last four winters they traveled to Phoenix, AZ. Bob led a very loving, family and faith oriented life. Survivors include wife, Margaret, St. Marys, two sons, Dennie (Kathy), Topeka, Vern (Janet), Rossville; a daughter, Nancy, Phoenix, AZ.; brothers, Bill (Kay), Topeka and Don (Peg), Topeka; sisters-in-law, Virginia Sumner, Texas and Beth Sumner, Washington; 8 Grandkids; 10 Great-Grandkids, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; 6 brothers, Cleve, John, Ted, Ray, Everett and Dale and a sister, Ethel Lutz. Bob will lie in state at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys on Monday, March 21, 2016 with a visitation starting at 5:30 P.M. and a Rosary following at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church St. Marys on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St. Marys, Kansas 66536.
