Margaret A. Sweany, 94, died on July 13, 2026, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS.

She had lived the past eight years at the Home of the Flint Hills in St. George. Margaret was born January 8, 1932 in Washington County, Kansas to Alvin D. Smart and Hazel M. (Gauby) Smart. She was a 1949 graduate of Beattie High School, and married her high school sweetheart, Verne M. Sweany, on December 30, 1951. Verne died on May 25, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Michael J. Sweany, and a brother, Alvin D. Smart, Jr.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Laura J. (Doyle) Pearl, St. Marys, sons, Thomas J. (Marian) Sweany, Topeka and James F. Sweany, Auburn, and her sister, Marie Byers, Frankfort, KS. Her grandchildren include Eric Pearl (and fiancé Paula Starr), Troy (Stacey) Pearl, Keith Pearl, Dan (Jen) Sweany, Drew (Mariaha) Sweany, Tricia (Zach) Andrews, Christine (Toby) Gallegos, Michelle Sweany (Michael March) and 18 great grandchildren.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 pm on Friday, July 17, 2026 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. The funeral will be at St. Marys United Methodist Church at 10 am on Saturday July 18, 2026 with burial following in Valley View Cemetery, St. Marys.
