Life Legacy


St. Marys- Joseph Christopher Nickerson, 93, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Community Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born October 7, 1916 at Kearns, Colorado, the son of John Frank and Filomena Saiz Nickerson. He grew up in Colorado and had proudly served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre.

Mr. Nickerson was a welder and had worked for EMICO Mining & Engineering Company for many years living in Kearns, UT.and moved to St. Marys in 1999. Mr. Nickerson had a love of music, playing the violin, guitar and piano. He was a luthier. Family Unity was the utmost importance to him. “Anybody that knew our dad knew what kind of man he was.”

On August 16, 1946 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Torres. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Henry (Therese) Espinosa, Riverdale, UT, Anthony (Dianne) Nickerson, and Julius Nickerson all of St. Marys; two daughters, Rosalinda (Gary) Fox, Fruit Heights, UT, and Dahlia Swehla, St. Marys; three brothers, David (Virginia) Nickerson and Frank (Elsie) Nickerson all of Layton, UT, and Orlando (Rosemary) Nickerson, St. George, UT; a sister Ida Cates, St. George, UT; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Requiem Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Assumption Chapel in St. Marys. Interment will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Marys where Military Graveside services will be conducted by a detail team from Ft. Riley. Mr. Nickerson will lie in state from 9:00 A.M.until 4:00 P.M.Friday, March 5, 2010 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys and also from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. A Rosary will be recited at 5:00 P.M. Friday, March 5, 2010 at Assumption Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial donations may be made to Kansas Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired or Assumption Chapel Building Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.
